Atlantis
Discussions about Atlantis that was the country of atlantes are not stopped even nowadays. Plato gave some information about this mysterious country and told us about its existence. From that time people searched Atlantis in all parts of the world and till nowadays we don't know exactly where Atlantis was situated. But places where it might be were different from those places that were described by Plato. And this mysterious land can't be found till nowadays.
But before Plato people also knew about Atlantis and it had a lot of different names. Ancient authors meant some kind of a government that was at the same level of development as Greece and was fighting with it, and during one of the wars it disappeared in a huge catastrophe.
But there are some ideas in occult sciences according to which Atlantis was the ancient civilization that existed before humanity and died in catastrophes. Legends and myths of different nations and cultures say the same.
Scientists try to find the ways to prove or disprove the existence of Atlantis but the majority of them think that it really existed but needs to be proved. But Plato had also some descriptions of fantastic countries that were presented as myths. But these stories hadn't got so much links as description of Atlantis.
According to Plato Atlantis was situated in Gibraltar not far from the cost of Spain and Morocco. According to other theories it was situated in the Atlantic Ocean. The main proof of those who support this theory is the similar name of Atlantis and the Atlantic Ocean as well as such a big country described by Plato could be situated only in the Atlantic Ocean. According to their legend, Atlantis was a highly developed country in the Atlantic Ocean that taught Egyptians and Mayas to build pyramids and astronomy. But a meteor fell on the Earth and caused a huge wave that destroyed Atlantis.
According to another theory Plato confused the sizes of Atlantis and then it can be similar to the island Crete. Besides, the ancient Minoan civilization disappeared because of catastrophe too.
According to another theory Antarctica is a dead Atlantis. According to representatives of this theory Atlantis was moved to the place of Antarctica because of lithosphere shift and before it Atlantis was located closer to equator and wasn't covered with ice.
Atlantis was a base of plot of many books, films and movies. And still is popular in all kinds of fiction.
People try to find the proofs of existence of this civilization in legends and myths of different nations and cultures and sometimes they find it. Egyptian legends said about a stranger that came from the West and taught to make arms and work tools, he also taught astronomy. Some legends of population of America tell about the same man but who came from the East and who was talking unknown language.
Those who investigate this problem pay attention to the fact that there are the same pyramids in Egypt and in Mexico, in both countries sarcophagus were made, dead people were mummified, the similar hieroglyphs were used, the similar numeral systems, there was a cult of sun in both regions, and a very developed astronomy. So some scientists suppose that Maya, Egyptians, Aztecs, Inca were disciples of Atlantes that came to them after the catastrophe.
